Topic Visit : The Paris of the middle ages (not middle at all ....)

This period not means necessarily grim, gloom, backward and dirty in Paris. Moreover, one of the greatest Cathedral Notre Dame, is building. The borning of the first university in France la Sorbonne, the streets are paved... It is the beginning of the Gothic Style and the horizon will be hopeful.


Cathédrale Notre Dame


The Seine River :


Paris has been builded around its harbor. Many times attacked by vikings, all the city is shaped because of this constraint.

Parisians watching if vikings are coming :)


The Louvre Museum :


The most frequented in the world with more then 10 millions visitors, an area of 135000 M² & the first collection of arts and sculpture in the world.

This kings palace considered as a jewel of the middle ages was a fortified castle defending proudhly the city until its demolition in 1528. During the extention of the museum and the setting of the glass pyramid, some fondations & remains has been unearthed. They are exposed in the underground of the museum as they are since 800 years.


Le Marais :


Next to the harbor it is the merchent place. It is named le Marais (the swamp) because its location was surrounded by another arm of the seine gone, passing formerly through the "Grands Boulevards". Once the swamp will dry, the Marais will become a very rich farming area.

Hotel De Ville


Paris became powerful in Europe. and social classes appears. It is a very popular place because the harbor is there and the ancestor of city council will be set here by Etienne Marcel.

It is plenty of parisians who celebrates an event, welcomes hangings or needs to work.


Hotel de sens


The new Bourgeoisie followed by the nobility builts amazing houses in this neighborhood which ones are still standing since 700 years, like the house of Rue De Miron, Rue Des Barres and the Hotel (of archbishop) De Sens !

Restored identically in 20th century by the municipality of Paris (thanks to your payments of tourist/city tax ;)


Pont Au Change


Named firstly the big bridge, it was the crossroad of Paris connecting Chatelêt to Ile De La Cité. Populated and full houses, it takes finally the name of Bridge "of exchange"; 120 exchanges offices where, foreigners coming from and out of the kingdom, could change their currencies. At the origin of credits and cheques (probably toll stations too because crossing this bridge was costing 1 denier).

Public bathhouses are also presents and they do not just taking bath ;)


Fontaine Des Innocents


The streets are tights and this former ossuary is propice to welcome theatrical performances, happenings and any events. Among shops and savages sales, it is actually the ancestor of flea markets. However, it is not innocent at all; beggars an stealer benefits of asylum police and passing trough the night means "big problems".

In the 18th century, the ossuaries will be moved to the one of the most visited attraction : "The Catacombs".

Chateau de vincennes :


One of the only witness of king's residence of the period Build by Charles V who were affraid of the revolt of Etienne Marcel.
